Community integration and sustainable urban renewal in Nigeria

Abstract

The paper examined integration of communities in achieving sustainable renewal of
urban communities for development of the individual and the social system. It was highlighted that communities integration seeks to ensure full participation of all people in community life such as school, careers, homes, relationships, leisure and other life styles in the community. This is to promote social capital development that is critical to urban renewal through physical development of shattered areas, improvement of local infrastructure, elimination of undesirable individuals or organisations and creation of development opportunities. It was concluded that menaces such as unmaintained infrastructural facilities, littered areas, non innovation of areas, etc in communities should be tackled effectively to achieve urban renewal. It was suggested that government and its urban renewal agencies should interface to integrate the lives of the individuals in communities through the utilisation of appropriate community renewal strategies as provided in this paper.
