Self-help as an instrument for sustainable community development

Abstract

Community development projects are basic requirements by any settlement for its effective and proper functioning for the vital overall development. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of self-help as an instrument for sustainable community development. Various community based projects were found to have been executed by both the private organisations and the government but with little impact to the community. To resolve the problems of effective community facility provision in the study area, it is recommended among other things that physical planning must be embraced since it involves the creation of functionally efficient and aesthetically friendly environment for living, working, circulation and recreation. Nigeria Government should make available institutions that extend credit facilities at very low interest rate for projects development and above all, Government should encourage and assist the people through awareness creation etc, to enhance communities infrastructural development and community participation in order to have sense of belonging.
